The primary function of the automotive air filter isto prevent airborne contaminants from entering the engine. If these contaminants are not filtered out they can cause serious damage and even shorten engine life.
The air filters could become plugged quickly by airborne contaminants and sand could be sucked into the combustion chamber of the engine. It also could cause the engine not to breathe correctly and lower the gas millage.
